Multiple Dogs Bitten By Rabies-Positive Raccoon In South Jersey

A South Jersey animal shelter has issued an alert after multiple dogs were bitten by a raccoon that later tested positive for the rabies virus.

Animal control officers responding to the bite report near Mercer Street in Hamilton confirmed that multiple dogs were bitten on Tuesday, Jan. 18, the Hamilton Township Animal Shelter & Adoption Center said.

The raccoon was found deceased and tested positive for rabies, officials said.

Residents are reminded to avoid approaching wild animals and ensure that their pets’ vaccinations are up-to-date.

Any recent human or animal exposures to raccoons in the area must be reported to Animal Control at 609-890-3550.

The next free rabies clinic is being offered on Feb. 26 and can be scheduled by calling 609-890-3555.
